Treatments
Currently,
a drug called interferon is sometimes used to treat hepatitis C infection.
Interferon may be used in combination with other drugs.
To help
protect their health, people who have hepatitis C should not drink alcohol.
They should consult a health care provider before taking any medications
(even over-the-counter) or herbal remedies. (While many medications
are safe for people with hepatitis C, certain medications can damage
your liver.)
If you
have hepatitis C, infection with hepatitis A or B can put you at greater
risk for liver damage. Talk to a health care provider about being vaccinated
against hepatitis A and B.
