Risk Groups
Hepatitis
C is a disease spread by contact with infected blood. People are at
risk for developing hepatitis C if they have:
- Injected
drugs ever, even once
- Received
a blood transfusion, blood products, or an organ transplant before
July 1992
- Had
sex with an infected person
- Had
sex with many partners, especially without condoms
- Worked
in the health care industry and were exposed to blood or needles
- Received
on kidney dialysis
Also,
babies born to mothers with hepatitis C are at risk. Although not common,
hepatitis C may be transmitted from one family member to another through
shared toothbrushes, razors, or other items contaminated by infected
blood. That's one more reason to get tested if you suspect that you
are at risk.
